Преследует глобальные мирохозяйственные цели: обеспечение международного оборота достаточным количеством пользующихся доверием платежных и расчетных средств, поддержание относительной стабильности международных валютных отношений и эластичности приспособления валютного механизма к изменениям в мировом хозяйстве и соотношении сил экономических и политических мировых центров. Последнее соглашение — Ямайское (1976-1978 гг.), сменившее известную Бреттон-Вудскую систему (1944 г.).
